There are security devices that are specifically designed for the interior of your home. The primary device used is a Passive Infrared Motion Detector. These devices are designed to detect motion inside your home. So when an intruder enters your home the sensor will"see" them and the system will go into alarm.
When you arm your system when you are still at home you would arm the system in "stay" mode. This automatically shuts off the motion detector so that you do not trigger the alarm while you are still at home. Many people in an effort to save a few dollars opt to get a lot of motion sensors inside their home and they do not add contacts to all of the windows. I see this a large security flaw.
Picture this:
You are at home at night and the system is armed in stay mode. You go off to bed and you are sound asleep. An intruder enters in your kitchen window. They walk down the hall where you and your children are sleeping. They walk right past the motion sensor but it does not trigger the alrarm because it is in stay mode and is shut off. The intruder has full access to your entire house while you are in your most vulnerable state - ASLEEP!
I have had many customers tell me about intruders that have done this very thing to them. This scenerio basically means that motion sensors are a second line of defense and they work when you are away from your home.
Another security device that is used inside the home but actually protects the perimeter is a glass break device. This device hears the sound frequencies that glass makes when breaking and triggers an alarm. These devices work great but only when the burglar breaks a window or sliding door.
