Wireless Home Security

Wireless Home Security uses the same components as a hard wired system. The only difference is that they are not connected to the security panel with wires. The communication is done with a transmitter and receiver. Each wireless device is a small transmitter that "talks" with the main panel. These devices are supervised devices. This means that the control panel must receive a message from each transmitter in the system in a specified time period or the system will generate a trouble.

Why install a Wireless Home Security System?

In many cases it is virtually impossible to physically get wire to the location that needs to be protected. Or at the very least the amount of labor to get the wire to the location would be very expensive or it would involve damage to your walls and ceiling to run the wire. You could run the wire on the surface of your walls but this is very unsightly so it is not usually an alternative in most cases.

What components are needed for a Wireless System?
  • Control Panel
  • Door and Window Contacts
  • Motion Sensors
  • Audible Device

The items listed above are the bare minimum required to have a working alarm system. The following is a list of optional devices:

control panel Control Panel
The control panel is the brains of the system. Your keypad and siren are wired to the control panel. These are the only 2 components that are still hardwired. There are several systems that actually have a wireless siren and keypad also.
keypad Keypad
The keypad controls the security system. You can arm, disarm bypass and test the system from this location. This is also where the installer will program your system. Many systems require a special keypad for the installer level programming.
door-contact Contacts
Contacts come in several types. They are always a combination of the reed switch(contact) and a magnet. Some contacts allow you to connect a standard hardwired set of contacts to the wireless device.
motion Motion Sensor
The motion sensor will detect motion that crosses it's field of view. There are motion sensors that are specially designed with pet immunity so that your cats or dogs can still move around your home while the system remains armed. You can also add specific masks to the sensor to block out certain fields of view.
wireless receiver Wireless Receiver
Your wireless system has a lot of devices that are transmitters. This receiver is what they "talk" to. The wireless receiver can be a separate device like this one or many times the receiver is built into the keypad.
keyfob Wireless Keyfob
These fit right on your key chain and can arm and disarm your alarm system. They also have a panic switch as long as you are within range of your receiver.
CO Detector Carbon Monoxide Detector
These devices monitor for deadly levels of carbon monoxide. Carbon Monoxide is Colorless, tasteless, odorless. These devices keep you safe.
Flood Detector Flood Detector
There are many areas of your house that could suddenly "spring a leak" without you being aware of it until substantial damage has occurred. These devices will alert you before water reaches that level.
Glass Break Detector Glass Break Detector
Many thieves will not bother with opening a door or window but instead will break your large glass windows. These detectors are especially tuned to "hear" the breaking glass and set off your alarm system.
